IT WAS launched as the drug that could help dieters lose an extra 500g for every kilo they shed.

Diet pill Alli hit the shelves of pharmacies in April and was endorsed by health experts, including the chief of University College Dublin’s School of Health and Population, Professor Patrick Wall.

The anti-obesity tablet, which is sold over the counter for E2, works by absorbing fat as part of a weight loss diet.

Now it has emerged that the country’s health watchdog, the Irish Medicines Board, has received six complaints about Alli since its launch.

The drug is being investigated in the United States over links to liver damage.

But its maker, GlaxoSmithKline, has strongly denied there is any link between the tablet and liver damage. It estimates that 50,000 consumers are taking the tablet.

The Medicines Board said it consistently monitors and reviews the safety of Alli, also called Orlistat, which is sold over-thecounter in pharmacists in partnership with the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use. A Medicines Board spokesman said: ‘To date, the IMB has received six reports of adverse reactions occurring in Ireland associated with use of Alli.

‘All reports involved gastrointestinal disorders and are consistent with the type of effects known to occur. No liver-related adverse reactions have been reported.’ The Medicines Board said Orlistat was licensed and authorised as a prescription only medicine Xenical since 1998 in Ireland.

But in January of this year the over-thecounter version known as Alli, which contains a lower dosage of the same active ingredient, was licensed.

The Medicines Board said it had received 50 adverse reaction reports in relation to Xenical since it was first licensed in 1998.

It said a ’small number’ of those reports related to liver damage but were associated with patients who were taking other medicines which could effect the liver.

The spokesman added: ‘Treatment with this medicine in particular should only be considered in the context of a comprehensive weight management programme.’ Last night, Glaxo said in a statement there is ‘no evidence that Alli causes liver damage’.

A company spokesman added: ‘The safety of consumers is of utmost importance to us.

‘We continually monitor and evaluate reports of adverse effects associated with use of all of our products, including Alli.

‘People who are overweight and obese are predisposed to liver-related disorders.’ At the time of its launch, Glaxo warned that flatulence and diarrhoea would be the side-effects of the drug unless it was taken with a low-fat diet.
